Etappe 3: From Northland to Waikato The region around and south of Rotorua is New Zealands geothermally most active area. In Rotorua itself and at Lake Rotorua stinky steam arises all day. Starting from Lake Rotorua we made a short side trip to the Green and Blue Lake and visited the Burried Village. The trip continued and led us to Waimangu Volcanic Rift Valley, the youngest thermal area in the world. It's the only known example for a geothermal ecosystem directly caused by a volcanic eruption and for the natural recovery of a New Zealand ecosystem after the total extermination. The tour followed the highway to Taupo, from there it ran right next to the Lake Taupo for about 40 km. Lake Taupo is New Zealands biggest lake and was formed during the eruption of a super volcano.
