The March Demands

German_Revolution_histor52

In the map you can see what had happened in the German cities in the year 1848.

Paris

The street demonstrations in Paris in 1848 resulted in the abdication of King Louis Philippe.
That was the immediate spur to revolt in other European countries too.

Some monarchs in Germany feared the fate of Louis-Philippe of France, so they accepted some of the demands of the revolutionaries.

Mannheim

The first demonstrations took place in Mannheim on 27 February . Thousands of people demanded political reforms,eg the freedom of the press, juries after an English example, civil rights, a German nation-state and a new constitution ( March Demands).
From Mannheim, they spread to Heidelberg, Karlsruhe and Cologne, to Frankfurt-on-Main and Munich.

Black Forest

On 27 February 1848, peasant unrest broke out in the Black Forest. From there it spread along the Rhine into the Odenwald, the Taubergrund, into Franconia and to Nuremburg. The violent unrest ( destruction of castles, administration buildings and tax records) lasted into the autumn.

Saxony

Rulers in the smaller German states were forced to give in to many of the March Demands because of the strong popular support, so liberal governments ( March Ministries) were installed in Saxony ( 16 March 1848) and later in Bavaria (20 March 1848).

Vienna

After the successful February Revolution in France the revolution spread across Europe and started in Germany with the large demonstrations on March 13, 1848, in Vienna, Austria, which resulted in the resignation of Prince of Metternich (Chancellor).
A new constitution was written that guaranteed freedom of the press and basic civil rights.
This constitution was unacceptable to the people, so the citizens of Vienna came out on the streets on May 26 / 27, 1848 and threw up barricades.

Bavaria

20 March 1848: March Ministries were installed

Berlin

After many people died in the Berlin street fight on 18th March 1848, King Friedrich Wilhelm IV ordered the withdrawal of his troops. After the king apologized for the death in the speech >To my dear Berliners< he placed himself under the protection of the the citiziens´ milita. He promised that Prussia would lead the way to a united Germany and accepted the demonstrators´ demands: the freedom of the press, free parliamentary elections and a constitution.

The March Demands

The March Demands
The demands which were made during the March Revolution 1848 everywhere in the German Confederation by the bourgeoisie (Bürgertum) were called March Demands.
The most important demands were:
- Freedom of the press
- Immediate production of a German parliament ( Democracy )

- German nation-state
- A new constitution
